Bathing for the old year

Bathe with herbal preparations, then spend the rest of the day in remembrance of the deities.

Punya Kaalaya (sacred period)

පුණ්‍ය කාලය

The sacred period around the turning of the year. Take your meals and drinks before it begins, then set aside all work and spend the first part in religious observances. The latter part, from the dawn of the New Year until the period ends, is when the New Year rituals (cooking, starting work, transactions and eating) are carried out at their allotted times.

Dressed in green and facing north, prepare milk rice (kiribath) mixed with mung beans, together with a variety of sweetmeats (kavili).

Dressed in green and facing north, begin all work, conduct transactions and eat the first meal of the New Year.

Anointing the head with oil

හිසතෙල් ගෑම

Dressed in blue and facing north, place nuga (banyan) leaves on the head and karanda leaves on the feet, then bathe with nanu (herbal paste) and oil mixed with nuga-leaf juice.

Setting out for work and livelihood

රැකී රක්ෂා සඳහා පිටත්ව යෑම

Dressed in green, eat milk rice mixed with mung beans, then set out for your occupation facing south.

Dressed in yellow or golden attire and facing north, plant a sapling.
